Make the beautiful climb up Jasper Peak to the tower just outside of Soudan Minnesota.

Upham in Minnesota Place Names insists the correct name for this hill is Chester Peak. I doubt any of the locals would recognize that name.

The Vermilion Iron Range, named from Vermilion Lake on its north side, has Sunset Peak in section 15, T. 63N, R. 12W, about two miles west of Winton; Chester Peak, three miles east of Tower, named in honor of Prof. A. H. Chester but often by error called Jasper Peak; and the North and South Ridges, respectively near Soudan and Tower. Minnesota Place Names

Jasper Lookout Tower still stand on a large hill just outside of Soudan Minnesota. I reached the top of Jasper Peak just before a light rain began. On a sunny day the view is glorious. The tower stands on a banded Iron-Formation interlayered jasper and steel-grey hematite. Lesser beds of black chert (commonly without oxides), and white chert. Rock is generally weakly to moderately magnetic.
