NICKERSON Township, organized September 10, 1907, and its village in section 4 were named in honor of John Quincy Adams Nickerson of Elk River, Sherburne County, who promoted the building of this line of the Great Northern Railway. He was born in New Salem, Maine, March 30, 1825; came to St. Anthony, Minn., in 1849, and four years later settled at Elk River, buying land on which a part of that village was afterward built; conducted a hotel and also engaged in lumbering; was postmaster of Elk River and treasurer of Sherburne County. The village developed around a sawmill in section 9 and shifted to section 4 when the Great Northern Railway and highway were built; it had a post office, 1895-1954, with Ernest A. Nickerson, first postmaster. Minnesota Historical Society
