The Moose Lake tower serves a new purpose

Moose Lake Township has reference to its Moose Lake and Moose Head Lake, each probably translated from their original Ojibwe names. The city of Moose Lake had a station of the Northern Pacific and Soo Line Railroads in section 20; its first house was built by John Coutia about 1869. Frank Duquette was the first merchant, moving there after Little Moose Station on the old military road closed, and served as first postmaster in 1872. Cornelius McCabe built the first full-service store, with a hall upstairs for meetings, known as McCabe Hall. One hundred ninety-eight persons from Moose Lake perished in the forest fire of October 12, 1918.
